“Think Harry Potter Meets Aladdin.” Books from our Backyard

Jodie is the author of the Ruby series for pre-teens. The books are published by Scholastic in Australia and New Zealand and Edizione Piemme in Italy. In Australia, they are available through major book stores and your local library.

Ruby Rosemount and the Magic Carpet was nominated by the publishing industry for the prestigious CBCA Book of the Year award. It was voted Dymocks Critic’s Choice by Dymocks Bookstores, and Book of the Month by Angus & Robertson, both national book store chains in Australia.

Ruby Rosemount and the Traveller’s Telescope was nominated by young readers in Western Australia for the W.A. Young Readers Book Award.

The series appears on the NSW Premier Reading Challenge list, an Australian state government initiative to encourage children to read.

What readers and critics are saying

“…a wonderful blend of magic, mayhem and humor.”
– Aussie Reviews

“Brownlee keeps the story moving right to the last page . Young fantasy fans will find this one a nice blend of the familiar (magic carpets, genies, and a magic mail-service) with the unusual (including Hobbit-like creatures called Spriggans who dwell in the sands of the oasis). A great read.”
– Reading Time magazine

“Jodie Brownlee’s characters are well drawn with beautifully developed personalities – especially the magic carpet (with attitude) and the spriggan, Milligan. Think Harry Potter meets Aladdin.”
– Books from our backyard

“It’s one of the best books I’ve read. I would have to rate it 10/10.”
Rosa Hall, age 10, reader

“The action plays at a cinematic pace, and swoops and zips along like the carpet.”
– Magpies Magazine

Jodie began her career as a visual artist and progressed (for want of a better word) to bar tender, house painter, photo librarian, photographer, web developer, activist, dog walker and copywriter, which prepared her for nothing really, except writing novels.
